can essence fm do through zero style fm?
Avi F![]() | Posted on Wed 20 Aug 2025, 01:23 AM if i were to set a modulator, just for a simple two operator setup, to a multiplier of zero, and assign lfo or modulator operator envelope, in the mod matrix, to the multiplier amount - would it be possible to achieve through zero fm by setting a negative offset and/or intensity? My understanding of through zero fm is currently limited to the concept that coarse frequency ratio, can also go into a negative range, and this does some sort of timbral difference to the resulting sound than regular fm will do. |

I probably don't understand thru zero fm that well, but I have instead made lots of voices so far in the meantime! Any tricks with modulations that might do this instead. . . Maybe phase hm. |
KODAMO![]() | Posted on Fri 22 Aug 2025, 07:58 PM Hi,All digital FM synths are "though-zero". Because they do FM by altering the phase of an oscillator and that phase can go forwards or backwards in the waveform, there is no zero to be stuck at. Through-zero FM only has a meaning in the analog domain, as far as I know. |
