Long time no news, but the wait was well worth it. To all EssenceFM owners, we're pleased to announce that the V7.0 firmware is out and brings numerous new features that will make it an even more amazing instrument.
For each of the 256 performances, a sequence can be stored and played back at any time. This sequence can be of any length between 1 and 128 steps, and handles up to 16 note triggers per step across 16 tracks. You can record incoming MIDI notes and notes played on the touch keyboard. Sequences can be transposed and resized in real-time. Recording can be done step-by-step or live.
The EssenceFM was sometimes criticized for its single LFO per voice. Although more LFOs could be simulated using envelope loops, it was still less flexible and practical than dedicated LFOs. We managed to find enough spare resources on the CPU to process an additional LFO, for each voice. This new LFO work the same as the first one, except that it does not have attack or delay parameters. It is not hardwired to the operators' AM/LFO FM parameters, so it is to be used in the modulation matrix.
Synths recently made a lot of progress in ergonomics. To keep the advantage the EssenceFM has, we did a few changes to the UI to make it look more appealing and practical. Now when no operator is focused, the 6 colored knobs directly control each OP's volume. It is displayed as a thick bar on the left side of operators. Real-time envelope levels are still displayed.
Who never used the EssenceFM to play MIDI files? You definitely should if you have not tried, simply select the GM Init performance and you're ready to go! The player has been improved; it allows to play entire folders of MIDI files like a playlist, with the ability to easily navigate through them and send MIDI data to MIDI out.
Effect settings can now be saved as presets into one of the 128 slots. Makes workflow quicker when you find nice settings that you want to reuse elsewhere.
We often said more LFOs could be simulated with envelopes, this was true but limited since envelopes were always retriggered on key press. Now you can also use them in Free Running mode, which means they are triggered only on the first key press. The next notes will reuse the same envelope. It can help a lot to create interesting, organic sounds that never sound the same.
