Acoustic Piano Patch Demo Video
Posted on 2020-10-03, 07:59 PMHi Guys! Pianos are very difficult to model with FM, but I think I've created a really good one!
Here's a link to the YouTube video I uploaded. I used a couple of custom waveforms, mainly the ALL1 and ALL2 waveforms off the FS1R at a couple of different settings. I have a set of ALL1, ALL2, ODD1, and ODD2 waveforms loaded into my Essence.
Posted on 2020-10-04, 02:39 AMThat is all one voice? That is pretty impressive.
Posted on 2020-10-04, 02:46 AMI'm speechless
Posted on 2020-10-05, 06:40 PMYup, just one 6-operator voice! Thanks guys!
Posted on 2020-10-05, 08:43 PMMaybe you achieve a Grand Piano as well having some more elegant and less wonky sound too?
Posted on 2020-10-05, 08:59 PMThis is a pretty good sound!
Some ideas: Add a voice to simulate hammer sound (especially for high notes), and another one with quiet sine waves spaced by half tones to simulate sympathetic resonance
Posted on 2020-10-06, 06:00 AMYes, a hammer thunk would help the realism on the upper octaves. I do know how to do that, using a fixed frequency modulator or two.
And I do have recordings of just the sympathetic resonance to craft a patch based on that sound. I made one once on my FS1R. It has kind of an organ-like, fuzzy, string-like timbre to it when you isolate it. The Motif has an effect they add in to their Piano patch that emulates the sympathetic resonance. It would be more fun if I could set it up so you could twist Knob-1 to fade between the Piano sound and the sympathetic resonance sound. Hint, hint! We need a ModMatrix destination to the output volume of each Voice so I can do that!
To match a Grand Piano would take a lot more work, and several more voices than just one. You would lose quite a bit of polyphony, but with 300 to start with maybe you can afford to drop 4X to 75 notes for a really superb patch. The difficulty is in the lowest ranges of the piano where the timbre changes every 4 or 5 keys.
I would ask you though, is it worth the effort it would take? I'm ready mentally to start working on something new. I've got a really good Acoustic Guitar and Piano now, maybe I should keep going and make some more new patches.

+1 on that!
regarding the grand piano - good, the EFM can stack voices to patches and overall, enough polyphony. But it's up to the creator! ;)

Posted on 2020-10-06, 05:00 PMSure, once I get a few more put together. Maybe a group of five?
Posted on 2020-10-08, 09:43 AMGreat ! ;o)

Thanks for sharing. Nice programming.
Hey, couldn't find link nowhere - too, no download for share - help much appreciated ;)
Posted on 2020-11-06, 09:13 PMI haven't shared any patches yet, sorry. Haven't gotten around to that, the patches are still on the EssenceFM and haven't been exported yet. They also require the ALL1/ALL2 waveforms I imported from my FS1R.
Posted on 2020-11-06, 09:25 PMOn the latest firmware exporting a patch will also export the voices and waveforms, so you don't have to worry about that ;)
Posted on 2020-11-07, 10:13 AMWoo-hoo!
